Chapter Twelve

When Belle opened the mail at Peace haven, amongst it was a Thank You card with a photo of Cherie baring a beaming smile holding Ruby.

Cherie looked just as she appeared to Belle on her exit from Peace Haven with glowing cheeks and shiny red hair—a picture of health.

She wrote ...

Dear Milton and Belle

You will never know just how much it meant to me, all that you did to enable my healing. You went out of your way to make my time with you comfortable and welcoming.

Belle’s special touch in the ensuite and bedroom, delicious homecooked food each day and Milton’s prolific words of wisdom and guidance during my counselling sessions enabled me to recover much faster. One day I’ll tell Ruby how you helped her when her daddy died.

Once I settle into my new home, I’d like to come and stay with you again, if that’s okay.

I’m with my parents in Winton Abbot and they’re helping me buy another home so I can be close to them, my work and Ruby’s pre-school.

My love to you all, God Bless

Cherie and Ruby

Belle and Milton needed a break before the next lot of guests arrived. They loaded their kayaks onto the roof-rack, packed a lunch and headed off towards the Lumley River near the local cheese factory.

Belle loved the location—especially the gelato ice-cream parlour in the tiny village of Lumley.

The river meandered towards a dam which used to be an active Hydro Power station, but no longer in use. Wildflowers grew along the riverbank, especially in spring.

The highlight for Belle was the Friesian cows staring at them from the side of the river bank with dreamy brown eyes and long eyelashes. The coloured kayaks passing by with humans fascinated them.

For Belle, an even greater bonus was the baby calves standing next to their mothers watching with bewilderment.

Belle fossicked inside her dry-bag, taking out her camera.

‘Milton, Could you hold my kayak steady while I take a photo of that cow with her calf?’

‘Why don’t you paddle in front of them and I’ll take the photo while they’re looking at you after I steady your kayak.’ Milton paddled behind Belle and then took hold of the nose of the tail of her kayak.

The weather was perfect—absolutely wind still, just how Belle liked it. The sun gently warmed her soul and as she gazed at the bright, blue sky and her surroundings, she imagined they were in paradise.

They pulled into a narrow inlet with a flat grassy area where they could disembark.

‘I’ll grab the basket with the food Belle. We could sit over there under the willow tree. The sun is too hot.’

Milton walked over and sat under the tree, unpacking the food from the basket. ‘Mmm, I see you packed my walnut brownies, thanks, Belle.’

‘I was going to pack some of that roast chicken we had last night, but I’m glad I didn’t now that it’s so warm—it’ll perish in this heat. Instead, we’ve got cold lamb sandwiches with that wholegrain bread I baked last night, full of seeds—sunflower, sesame and flax.
